Christ Replaces Moses as a Lawgiver

by  of Lake Road Chapel on February 21, 2018

Christ replaces Moses as a lawgiver, just as He replaced other Old Testament types. Moses was the shadow, but Christ is the substance. Moses gave laws to a civil nation made up of mostly unregenerate people. Christ gave laws for a nation of fully regenerate people who all know the Lord and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Violent Men

Topic: Killing Sin
Category: Full Sermons
Bible: Matthew 11:7-15, Luke 16:16

In Matthew 11:12, Jesus describes the type of people that enter the kingdom of heaven as “violent men.” He’s not talking about any kind of natural or physical violence. He’s talking about a different kind of violence that comes from a holy desperation to follow Christ and kill sin no matter the cost.

Matthew 11:7 And as these were going away, Jesus began to speak to the multitudes about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 “But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ palaces. 9 “But why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and one who is more than a prophet. 10 “This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ 11 “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men take it by force. 13 “For all the prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 “And if you care to accept it, he himself is Elijah, who was to come. 15 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Providence: The Hand of God Over Everything

by  of Lake Road Chapel on April 26, 2017

The providence of God has to do with the fact that God is looking out and taking thought for everything ahead of time. Are you in a hard situation right now? Well God says, “I have already thought of that and made provision for that.” Provision means that God saw it ahead of time and provided. God not only created all things in the past, but He also actively and constantly cares for all things in the present. He upholds all things, preserves all things, and directs all things in order that He might ultimately provide for all things.

How Must a Man Get Right With God?

Understand something very important. You cannot save yourself. You can win yourself into heaven. You cannot ear your way into heaven. You cannot pay yourself into heaven.

Your efforts are nothing more than dung! Stop trying and start trusting in the Man who did the only thing that is acceptable to God. Trust in Jesus for your salvation.

Don’t Soften the Reality of Hell

by  of Lake Road Chapel on April 5, 2017

Think of this: Jesus looked out on a crowd of people, and He said, “Unless you repent, you’ll perish just like those people that died where Pilate cut them up in the Temple and offered their blood with the sacrifice.”

How could You say that? Lord, these might be nice people! But He just looks out on a crowd, He knows; He said, “Unless something big changes in you, you’re going to perish.” That’s what He is saying. Just take it for granted. He knows that about the human heart. It’s hard for us to believe that sin could really be that bad, and that Hell could really be that bad because we are such good people. And that’s always what comes up: “We’re so nice, we’re so good; so and so is so nice, I can’t believe God would put them in Hell.” And it is hard, because we can’t see it.

But beloved, you know, the more hardened you get, the less you can see. There are a lot of people right now that are living with somebody and see nothing wrong with it outside of marriage. They don’t feel that. There are homosexuals that are practicing things that, at one time, they would have said were an abomination. They don’t feel anything wrong about it.

Why?! Because the heart gets hardened. And the fact that you are blind to something doesn’t mean that it isn’t an abomination! So if I see in my life, I start thinking, “Ah, it’s not that bad to lust after a woman. I mean, you know, that’s normal.” And you start thinking like that, and God says this is something that would put you in Hell; you’ve got to get your mind over to what God said, and let the Bible shape what you believe about right and wrong; because you are not an accurate source of good and evil.

I mean, Bertrand Russell, I read his thing on “Why I Am Not A Christian”; I thought, “Wow, this ought to be really profound, you know, why this great philosopher is not a Christian.” The biggest thing he said was, “Jesus Christ taught eternal punishment, and I don’t believe it. And I’m not going to believe on Christianity if it teaches eternal punishment.” You see what that is? That’s the criminal deciding whether the righteous judge is righteous. It’s a very dangerous thing, it’s a fearful position to take.

Think of this: Back at the beginning, God said, “In the day you eat thereof, you shall surely die.” (Genesis 2:17). Suppose that I had said, (I mean, that was much milder that what the New Testament says. Much milder. “In the day you eat thereof, you shall surely die.”) Suppose that I had told you, if you had never seen this present world, I told you this is what that means – you shall surely die – what it means is: that there would be mountains of millions of skulls; there would be cemeteries filled with people; there would be babies born with gross deformities and horrible diseases; there would be atrocities committed that I really can’t mention from the pulpit. I know things about the Holocaust even that I can’t tell you about from the pulpit, they are so horrible they would be defiling to even hear it.

But I can tell you, beloved, there’s stuff going on in the world, last night and right now, that are so horrible we couldn’t talk about them here in this meeting. And if I say, this is what is tied up in the words, “DON’T EAT THAT FRUIT, YOU’RE GOING TO DIE!” What it means is that mountains and mountains of people are going to die. What it means is that unspeakable wickedness is going to be done on innocent people and children. What it means is all these horrible diseases and people dying in excruciating pain, you would say, “A God of love could never do that. I don’t believe that.”

Well, beloved, Jesus has been much more explicit. And He talks about Torment, and He talks about Darkness, and He talks about Weeping! And we dare not soften this up, and in our minds let the spirit of the age come into us so much that we don’t really believe it. And I confess it’s happened to me, I don’t really believe it. And every now and then, I get a little glimpse that this is really true. What’s going to happen when the Lord returns, the sky opens, and you think, “It’s really real! He really is real!” Now what did Jesus say about Hell? Because that’s real too. You see. We desperately need God – I’m not talking about other people desperately need God – We, I, desperately need God to help me in this, to see; because whenever the Holy Spirit comes and makes it real, you start doing things differently. You start thinking differently.

Are You Proud? God Moment by Moment Upholds You

by  of Lake Road Chapel on April 27, 2017

How should this truth of the providence of God affect our lives?

First of all: This ought to fill all of us with great humility. Great humility. Everything we have. Everything we are. Everything we have accomplished. Even the fact that you are alive here tonight, sitting here tonight, is hanging from the slenderest thread of God’s merciful providence.

You have a strong body? So did Christopher Reeve, Superman, till he got thrown from a horse and became a quadriplegic who had to be on a breathing apparatus for the rest of his life.

You have good eyes? So did Fanny Crosby till the doctor put the wrong thing in her eyes when she was a little girl, and made her go blind.

Are you athletic? So was Joni Eareckson until she jumped into that water that was too shallow and broke her neck.

Mona and I were in a coma unit a number of years ago there was a fellow in there maybe in his forties. We said what happened to him? Well the wife and husband were out riding their bikes and they got tangled up somehow and fell down. They were not going fast. They were just out for a little bike ride. Fell down he hit his head on the pavement and he’d been in a coma ever since. One little chance accident.

You have financial prosperity? There are so many people in human history that thought they had it made they lost everything just like that. And you could too.

Paul says in in 1 Corinthians 4:7 “What do you have that you had not received?” And we might well add to that and what would be what have you received that God hasn’t sustained moment by moment or you would have lost it by now.

So I want to say to you beloved: What are you tempted to be proud of tonight? Are you girls, tempted to be proud of your beauty? Do you realize you could lose that in a second? Are you proud of how smart you are? One little thing and it could be gone and you can’t even put sentences together.

Beloved, we’re being upheld by this slender thread of providence all the time. Everything, everything you have, everything you are, everything that you’ve accomplished, its been accomplished through grace, grace, grace all along the way. And every little individual thing that has kept you alive to get you here tonight.

If you’re not a Christian, don’t go out of here without crying out to God.

If you are a Christian, God have mercy on you if you’ve got pride welling up in you. Moment by moment sustained by unspeakable, slender, thread of providence.
