Western society is divided on basic issues of morality such as abortion. We have come to expect Christians to defend the sanctity of life in a society that allows abortion.
The Church has been an advocate for the rights of children and a fierce opponent of anti-life policies, but there are now several pro-abortion protestant clergy who are making headlines.
The irony of a Christian minister that advocates for the killing of the unborn is lost on these individuals who preach God’s love in the same breath that they praise the rights of women to choose to end the lives of their unborn children.
Clergy of numerous denominations have all advocated for abortion in recent years. Mercifully few, these wolves in sheep’s clothing have been garnering headlines simply because they stand out, with their sermon of sin in the name of the Lord.
On September 12th at Kentucky’s State Capitol building, a group of clergy from a variety of denominations held a rally in support of liberal positions for several social issues, which included advocating for abortion.
The Higher Ground Moral Day of Action, as the event was known, promoted educational and economic equality, criminal justice reform and promoted abortion as essential ‘health care’ and a woman’s right.
Baptist, Methodist, Episcopalian and Presbyterian clergy were active in the rally and its support of abortion indicates a dangerous trend in the creep of liberal ideology in religious doctrine.
For example, the 2014 column by pro-abortion Reverends, Dr. Alethea Smith-Withers and Harry Knox contends that “Decisions about reproduction are morally complex.
The wisdom found in our faith traditions is rich, nuanced, and rarely absolute. Here is the good news: Most people of faith in the United States support access to compassionate abortion care.”
Yet numerous national polls show this statement to be flat out wrong. Even if God-given morality needed an opinion poll, abortion would still lose, according to a 2016 Gallup poll.
A majority of Catholics, Protestants and Mormons all expressed their belief that abortion is morally wrong, with Jewish respondents the only majority dissenting opinion.
An associate youth pastor at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Niechelle Guidry Jones, is also a member of the clergy advocacy board for Planned Parenthood.
She recently delivered a speech in New York City celebrating Planned Parenthood and its role in many of the 40 million abortions performed in the US since 1973.
Invoking God in the name of sin, she said to the crowd, “God, we thank You on this day. We thank You for the miracle of another day and for our lives and for drawing us into this sacred space and time of celebration.”
Guidry Jones went on to say, “The doors were opened for women to rise up against the political, religious and patriarchal machines that sought to undermine our right to choose and decide what happens to our own perfect, beautiful and holy flesh,” while conveniently ignoring the effect on the innocent flesh of the unborn and their right to choose.
Planned Parenthood, the organization started by Margaret Sanger, a prominent eugenicist, is now supported by some extreme liberal clergy who cloak their agenda in the trappings of religion.
Susan Chorley is perhaps the best example of pseudo-Christian clergy using distorted interpretations of the Bible to justify their own sinful choices. Chorley was a minister at a New England Church and experiencing a difficult time with her husband.
When she found out she was pregnant, she decided that another child would “add to the stress” of her relationship with her husband. Now she has defended her decision to abort by stating that “faith should help ‘religious’ women to embrace discussions about abortion.”
Her belief that faith is dynamic and can evolve has allowed her to bend and distort God’s Word to suit her own convenience. Now Chorley travels the country to share her pro-abortion views with other churches.
The Bible is quite clear on the topic of abortion, as are early Church writings. First, the Bible condemns absolutely, without exception, the taking of innocent life.
Second, the Bible makes quite clear that a child in the womb is a person. There is no Biblical standard set for heart beats, spinal cord formation or weeks of gestation. Life starts at conception or even before, according to the Word.
The Bible uses the same term for a baby that is born and one that is still in the womb because God recognizes no arbitrary difference between the two. We do not become persons, created in the image of the Divine, by passing a certain age.
Instead, we are being made from the first moment in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27)
Stated simply, God forbids taking innocent life, no matter how young, and unborn children are unquestionable innocent.
This right to life naturally trumps the right of a mother to choose to abort just as it supersedes the right of any murderer to strangle innocents in their sleep.
Moloch, an ancient god worshipped by the Canaanites, was represented by a giant bronze statue with a bull’s head. The statue was heated and sacrificial victims were thrown into the flames.
Archeological evidence has shown the use of child sacrifice to Moloch in the ancient nation of Carthage and Moloch has come to be the symbol of a false god that demands a costly sacrifice.
It is beyond imagination that those primitive furnaces could have received nearly 60 million unborn children, the sinful offering given by modern-day America.
Today, Moloch has multiplied as abortion clinics cut short the life of millions of young lives for a mother’s right to choose, for a “stress-free life” and to enable lives of sin.
What is most terrifying however is not that abortions are still being performed. No, it is rather that several church leaders have moved to support such clear violations of God’s holy law.
Cloaking sinful desire and murder in the language of religion is an affront to God. Don’t be mistaken, there is no gray area surrounding abortion: right is right, even if nobody is doing it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it.
This clearly applies to the sin of abortion. It is time that Christians stand up for God’s Word and morality rather than use it to justify their sin.
